Ecological Footprint Network

Ecological Footprint Network: worldwide consensus on Footprint calculation

In order to enhance the rigor, credibility and impact of this thinking worldwide, Mathis Wackernagel and his colleagues are setting up the Ecological Footprint Network that brings together the worldwide community of Footprint practitioners from academia, governments, business, and organizations.
The Mission of the Ecological Footprint Network is to make sustainability specific by transforming the Ecological Footprint into a vocal and rigorous measure of human demand on nature.

The Ecological Footprint Network will be able to accomplish this mission by:
1. Building the Community – The Ecological Footprint Network will be a membership organization of Ecological Footprint practitioners and other individuals engaged in sustainability. They will begin to build the Network by inviting senior Footprint practitioners and organizations as “founding members”.

2. Developing Quality Standards – A Scientific and a Policy Advisory Council of both practitioners and eminent scientists will be established. The Councils will support the development of quality standards in accounting and communication. Common certifiable standards will not only strengthen the scientific rigor, effectiveness, and transparency of Ecological Footprint accounts, but also the reliability and credibility of Ecological Footprint applications everywhere.

3. Establishing a Certification System – Practitioners who wish to have their work reviewed by the certification arm of the Network can submit their work and qualify for the certified seal of quality.

4. Advancing the Underlying Research - The new standards will be backed and enhanced by research to advance the scientific rigor, transparency, and communication effectiveness of the Ecological Footprint.
